Food Safety Supervisor FAQs

In Australia, it is a legal requirement that Australian food businesses employ at least one Food Safety Supervisor in each premises. This helps minimise contamination when handling food products and helps keep establishments and their customers safe.

Yes, the Food Safety Supervisor course is delivered fully online and accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For most students, the online course component of the Food safety Supervisor takes around 6 hours to complete. This includes online lessons, multiple-choice quizzes, and case studies. The Observer Report can take a couple of hours more. It’s not unusual for students to enrol and complete the course on the same day.

However, everyone learns at a different pace and you don’t have to do the entire course all in one go. You can do as little or as much as you’d like in any one session and log on and log off as many times as you like.

When we’ve assessed you as competent, we’ll send you an email to let you know that you’ve passed, as well as an email copy of your Statement of Attainment.

Your food safety program will generally specify when a refresher is due, normally 5 years.

If it is a NSW Food Authority certificate there is a renewal date printed on the certificate.

If you don't currently have a workplace or workplace supervisor this practical assignment can be completed in your home kitchen as a simulated environment and observed by someone suitably experienced in food preparation.

If you don't have anyone suitable you can take either images or video of you performing these tasks and submit them to us as evidence that you have these skills.

Please note you do need to complete the Food Safety Program records contained in the assignment. You are welcome to use our template on page 3 or you can submit actual records of your own. This is up to you.

Assessment process

At the end of each section, you will complete a quiz with mainly multiple choice and a few fill-in-the-blank questions. Once you've scored 100% you can move on to the next section. Don’t worry if you get a question wrong, this is a competency-based assessment and you can attempt the quiz as many times as you need. Our trainers are here to assist if you get stuck.

Workplace assignment

As well as testing your knowledge we also need to test your practical skills. You will download a workplace assignment that you can type directly into. You are required to demonstrate your practical skills in the presence of a suitably qualified 3rd party observer.

Once you have completed the skills you can email the document to us for assessment. This will be your final task.

Once fully assessed as competent we will email your certification.

Our workplace assignments do not require verbal or video answers to any questions.
